I have completed this (I even have some duplicates) but I have many decks that still have yet to be played. I don't like Naya, so my Mayael deck has yet to be played for example. I don't play a ton, so why would I waste an opportunity to play on her?

But I still want to build decks. So I think I will just tear apart an old deck, like Shu Yun to build the new monoB God.

Mayael became Samut and the one game so far was okay, but I felt like I wasn't doing much until turn 6 or so, and at that point I was dropping one huge creature per turn until the table decided I needed to die. I fully understand that I could probably rework the deck to make it better, but it just isn't my play style. I also broke apart Shu Yun, the Silent Tempest and Trostani, Selesnya's Voice as well.

I currently have built and a general power level scale of 1-10:

0c
Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger Voltron (6)

1c
Heliod, God of the Sun only tokens (5)
Thada Adel, Acquisitor thingamajigs and the Little Mermaid (3)
Marrow-Gnawer (really Ink-Eyes, Servant of Oni) Relentless Rats (7)
Shauku, Endbringer very anti-creature (8)
Krenko, Mob Boss Tribal (9)
Zada, Hedron Grinder coin flips (5)
Titania, Protector of Argoth sac those lands (6)

2c
Ramirez DePietro Pirates! (1)
Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons -1/-1 counters (5)
Depala, Pilot Exemplar Vehicles/Dwarves (3)
Anya, Merciless Angel Protect the Weak (from others) (6)
Stonebrow, Krosan Hero anti-non basics (7)
Rasputin Dreamweaver control (8)
Kiora, the Crashing Wave sea monsters (5)
Glissa, the Traitor WoW themed Zombies (4)
Axelrod Gunnarson Guns'n Roses Theme (3)
Nin, the Pain Artist waiting for a U/R Artificer (6)
Ayli, Eternal Pilgrim Chinese Menu Life Combo (9)

3c
Vial Smasher the Fierce/Kraum, Ludevic's Opus 1v1 (9)
Intet, the Dreamer Dragon Tribal (6)
Tetsuo Umezawa Grixis Good Stuff (8)
Jenara, Asura of War +1/+1 counters are good right? (7)
Tariel, Reckoner of Souls Angel tribal (6)
Alesha, Who Smiles at Death 1v1 Power 2 (8)
Samut, Voice of Dissent Lots of big things (4)
Sek'Kuar, Deathkeeper Jund Good Stuff (9)
Ghave, Guru of Spores +1/+1 counters are good right? (9)
Tasigur, the Golden Fang Choices (7)
Damia, Sage of Stone Underworld themed (6)
Bartel Runeaxe Cards from Grixmas Past (5)

4c
Witch-Maw Nephilim or Atraxa, Praetors' Voice my favorite things (8)
Yidris, Maelstrom Wielder Charms (7)
Kynaios and Tiro of Meletis Group Hug (4)
Saskia the Unyielding Someone is going to die (7)
Breya, Etherium Shaper Loads of Artifacts (8)

5cGeneral Tazri Allies (6)

I don't have any decks that I think are a 10, but I do have a pretty wide variety of the rest. I have a few of the same color combos, but I also have a lot of different strategies and play styles as well. So over all I have most of the color combos represented, but I just have not found a W/G that I like, and I am very likely to break up the W/G/R deck I have as well. It just isn't my play style and there isn't a general that just screams "Play ME!"

I have 37 decks that started as a challenge to build of each. I found it tricky to care about certain color combos.

I currently have 6 mono
Heartless Hidetsugu and Bosh in red.
Akroma in white
Arcanis blue
Geth black
Seton green.

I have allied arcs
Rubinia and Derevi
Merieki and Zur
Thraximundar, Nekusar, and a recent Lord of Tresssrhorn for my son
Shattergang
Uril

I have Enemy wedges
Queen Marchesa and Zurgo
Zedruu
Animar, Riku, and Maelstrom Wanderer
Ghave and Karador
And recently put Damia back together

I have allied pairs
Isperia and Brago
Oona
Rakdos
Stonebrow
No GW though

I have enemy pairs
Teysa and Karlov
Niv mizzet and Mizzix
Nath
Ezuri
No RW... Though I have an idea for using Hidetsugu and Darien in. Bruse Tarl deck.

I had colorless Karn and 5c Cromat... But they didnt stick.

I have Atraxa and Breya but dont care about the other 4c commanders, though I've seen one by Uktabi Kong that looks heckin' fun I might try:
http://forum.dragonhighlander.net/EDH_Forum/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=18638&sid=597fa4303131e93777176b6132556ad3

So I'm close. I think my UB gets the least play. The others i just rotate through as seems appropriate for what my play group is building.

I also have a crazy amount of decks, but with a collection that goes back 17 years, I can usually build something playable for less than $10. By playable I don't mean competitive, but I think the key is to feel relevant at all stages of the game. I actually would have the challenge complete if they hadn't printed 4-color commanders.

5-Color
Scion of the Ur-Dragon (Dragon tribal, top tier)
Horde of Notions (Elemental tribal, top tier)

Bant Jenara, Asura of War (Animates lands and uses Terra Eternal)
Esper Merieke Ri Berit (Control, top tier)
Grixis Sedris, the Traitor King
Jund Sek'Kuar, Deathkeeper (Shaman tribal)
Naya Mayael the Anima
Naya Uril, the Miststalker (Over 50% of the spells are Auras, top tier)
Mardu Oros, the Avenger (Pestilence and protection from black)
Temur Intet, the Dreamer (top tier)
Abzan Doran, the Siege Tower (abuses lifegain)
Jeskai Ruhan of the Fomori
Sultai Vorosh, the Hunter (proliferate without infect)

Azorius
Isperia the Inscrutable (tutor toolbox)
Kangee, Aerie Keeper (Bird tribal, wicked Dovescape/Guile combo)
Dimir
Grimgrin, Corpse-Born (Zombie tribal)
Oona, Queen of the Fae (let's mill properly)
Vela the Night-Clad (Rogue/Ninja tribal)
Rakdos
Lyzolda, the Blood Witch
Rakdos the Defiler
Gruul
Ulasht, the Hate Seed (Saproling tribal)
Selesnya
Rhys the Redeemed
Orzhov
Vish Kal, Blood Arbiter (Vampire tribal, abuses lifegain)
Izzet
Nin, the Pain Artist
Golgari
Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord (Shadowborn Apostle)
Nath of the Gilt-Leaf (Elf tribal)
Sapling of Colfenor (fun Call of the Wild/Haunted Crossroads combo)
Boros
Jor Kadeen, the Prevailer
Simic
Edric, Spymaster of Trest

White
Darien, King of Kjeldor (Soldier tribal, go Tarnished Citadel!)
Kemba, Kha Regent (Cat tribal)
Blue
Azami, Lady of Scrolls (Wizard tribal, once had 19 tokens from Day of the Dragons)
Jalira, Master Polymorphist
Talrand, Sky Summoner
Black
Endrek Sahr, Master Breeder (Zombie tribal, Conspiracy shuts off his sacrifice trigger)
Geth, Lord of the Vault (Almost every spell in the deck is creature removal, top tier)
Red
Krenko, Mob Boss (Goblin tribal)
Zirilan of the Claw (Dragon tribal)
Green
Patron of the Orochi
Titania, Protector of Argoth

Colorless
Hope of Ghirapur (Voltron)

yeah... the 4 color commanders really put a dampener on my plans to have 1 of each.

I was so close! Built a GW Tolsimir deck- i really dig the interaction with the changed legend rules and Skullclamp (yay Voja tokens). Then I was going to build RW Brion Stoutarm as tribal giants... But I realized that Ruhan is a giant and said "Oh man, that means I get to run Frost Titan and Rite of Replication!"

I'm probably working on it by coincidence. There's several deck archetypes and colours I want to work on. Mostly I get grabbed by a mechanical or story theme I want to run with and play around with and that turns into a powerful desire to plot a deck, so I'm certain I'll cover each of the colour combinations over time.

Wedges:
- Temur and Mardu are done: I've made a Temur beatdown with Surrak Dragonclaw & a Queen Marchesa vorthos.
- I'd like to make a Jeskai deck but I've got no compelling strategy to work with in there that resonates with me and gives me an opportunity for creativity. (I don't want to do Another Narset Free Spells deck, for instance.)
- I've considered making a Mimeoplasm-powered Eldrazi Sultai deck.
- I've wanted to make an Abzan deck for ages, and as I was drafting it up, Atraxa, Praetors' Voice came out with most of the same cards, which felt validating (hooray, I was going in the right direction!) but now I don't feel a compelling need to return to work on an Abzan deck. :) Still, Reyhan, Last of the Abzan + Ravos, Soultender are begging me to make a deck out of them, and I'd love to throw Ikra Shidiqi, the Usurper's buttlink ability in there.

Shards:
- I'd like to try out a Grixis deck that uses some mill to power cards like Wight of Precinct Six but I think that's what Yidris does, so I'll play around with that deck first.
- I so want to make a Naya Dinosaurs deck when that becomes a thing.
- I'd like to make an Esper Artifacts deck that features Ensoul Artifact, Tezzeret the Schemer, Tezzeret's Touch and Sydri, Galvanic Genius, but I'm not sure how I can extend that into a viable game plan yet.

Other themed plans:
- Equipment-based deck: probably in red-white with both the red-white Partner commanders.
- An Enchantments deck with Starfield of Nyx in it. Probably will be green-white, or green-white-black borrowing from C15's Daxos deck.
- A Land deck... somehow... probably in red-green.

I had fun with a Zedruu un-grouphug deck, where I play a lot of enchantments that mess with the board state or make life interesting/difficult for people that work even when donated.

Sometimes all it takes is an interesting interaction. I love how Caltrops works with Sydri and giving artifact creatures deathtouch.

Its entirely up to the play group, but I've wanted to do a land based deck with Genju of the Realm as the commander for a while. Lots of man-lands and cards that really care about lands like Into the Wilds.

Jeskai is one of the last decks I made to complete the challenge. When looking at the five available commanders, the pickings seemed pretty slim to me. Narset is typically hated on for being played the same way every time. Numot being played is unheard of, because land destruction is generally avoided. Zedruu I'm sure is fun for some people, but it also seems like the same deck every time (although there are some tribal variants which probably aren't horrible). So you're left with Ruhan and Shu Yun, both of which feel too open-ended that it's hard to feel any one theme works best with them.

I ended up with Narset and made a theme deck. It's not perfect and often plays a similar game as most Narset decks, but at least it's not busted to pieces.

I've had pretty good times with an enchantments-based Anax and Cymede deck. Runs Starfield of Nyx, but really isn't dependent on it though.

Maze's End with stuff like Scapeshift is a lot of what my Lands.dec focuses on, but there's a lot of other 'lands matter' stuff in it too. You could always try making a Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle deck in Gruul.

It's such a relief to read all of that -- it's not just me who has that experience! Ruhan's just "you're gonna attack somebody" (well ok if you insist), and Shu Yun or any Partner combination doesn't suggest any particular game plan, so it's hard to figure out what to really do with these decks. Then like you said, the others go so far the opposite way they only ever really have one basic deck plan, so I don't get to bring much creativity to bear.

Originally I tried drafting out a deck based around getting as many casting triggers as possible to trigger Prowess and Prowess-like triggers (Strongarm Monk, Soulblade Djinn, Young Pyromancer, Talrand, Sky Summoner) using multicasting spells (Rebound, Spelltwine, Talent of the Telepath, etc) and maximizing off of it with World At War and Waves of Aggression... but that wound up looking like a deck that would "go off", do some enormously scary stuff, and then return to being fairly weak in every other player's turn, during which time those other players would be alarmed enough to finish me off before it happened again. The only way to make it not be a death sentence was to ensure that when it went off it'd combo so hard it finishes the game decisively, which I don't think is very fun.

A friend made a Voltron deck out of Shu Yun, but I'm looking at other color combinations for Voltron (especially now Mardu with Licia, Sanguine Tribune).

niheloim wrote:

That's one I explored originally! It's cool to know someone else explored that before me. I was looking at just using enchantments that don't care who the controller is, and handing them out for cards and lifegain. I wasn't sure where to go with it though: there had to be a "rest of the deck" and I wasn't sure what that should be. I think I need more J*nny-ish complexity in how my cards interact with each other and their commander, because apparently I have to make life hard for myself. (lol)

I also wanted to avoid shutdowns like Aggressive Mining or Steel Golem, so it was tricky to figure out which cards messed with people enough but not too much. (Maybe I should open or look for a Strategy topic about that.)

If only Zedruu also had black, she'd be so much more deviously fun. And maybe also banned. :P

niheloim wrote:

Huh, that might be a good direction to explore... :) I think I was over-focusing on having to make use of her first ability to justify using her as a commander, which would've meant a bunch of non-creature artifacts which I'd make creatures, but that didn't seem any good. (Paying {U} regularly to be allowed to have a 4-mana 4/4 is just a convoluted way to effectively have a deck full of bad overcosted creatures.)

I should instead focus on the second ability and just use the first when it's icing on the cake, like Ichor Wellspring or Mycosynth Wellspring becoming suddenly trivial to remove because I get to use them as chump blockers.
