Partly because I once had this fantasy I'd be able to play vintage.

What do you want to play? Such a tiny fraction of decks even use this it makes me curious.

I don't know about Sinis, but I got both my Seals as a matter of opportunity. The first was offered up in exchange for an MBS set, which was a pretty good deal at the time. I kept it just in case I might ever want it for an EDH or Vintage deck. The second came in when I was to grade the P3K cards of the store I normally work with. They made me a good deal on it and it seemed like a good hold to offer up for trade later. Unfortunately a month afterwards the judge foil came out, can't win them all... I never looked at what plays a Seal in Vintage. Knowing it is sometimes played was enough for me. Since then I've decided to try to put together a playset of Magic (restricted cards 1x) so now I simply want to own a copy for that.

Yesterday I got 3 The Dark Ball Lightning and Arabian Nights Piety (light) because SCG had a good price. That encouraged me to check out CK and had me finish a couple of Beta playsets and a few other interesting things.

Beta: Channel NM 1
Beta: Sacrifice NM 4
Beta: Ley Druid NM 1
Beta: Fastbond NM 1
Beta: Stasis NM 1
Arabian Nights: El-Hajjaj NM 1
Antiquities: Bronze Tablet NM 1
Legends: Invoke Prejudice NM 1

Fortunately my new work will start distracting me tomorrow because this has been enough spending on Magic for a while.

My knowledge of the format is less than it used to be (I haven't really looked since pre-Innistrad).

I was interested in TPS and Gush mostly. Realistically, I think I could only play something involving Null Rod.

You should. The format has changed a huge amount in the last 2 years.

I would but...

1. There are no people who play in my area (despite being the 4th largest municipality in North America). I know of no events nearby.

2. Short of a lottery/miracle/post-capitalism/lolreprints, I will not, and likely never be able to afford Power. I guess proxy tournaments could happen, but, see point 1 for that. The fact that I own duals and some vintage goodies, I feel only underlines the fact that I would have so much further to go.

3. I don't especially want to play some Null Rod deck in defiance of not owning power. I guess, it just feels like a consolation prize in an environment where your opponent might just win if they go first.

Really, it's mostly 1. Playing with awesome old cards is one of the reasons I play EDH. Vintage, I'm afraid will forever be out of my reach.

It's ok to dream. If you had asked me 5 years ago I wouldn't have dreamed to own a full set of Power and just about every high end card at this point, let alone that I would've traded for most of it (8 out of the 10 pieces of Power I own and more). It takes a lot of work, mostly buying and reselling collections and bulk rares for me, but it's not impossible.

I hate to be a total stick in the mud, and I don't disagree with you, but it's just not in the cards right now (hur hur) and won't be, for long into the foreseeable future.

I don't have time to flip rares/buy collections. I have a demanding job, kids, etc. I'd really like to, but, it's so far out of reach it's... kind of depressing. Which is why I don't dream about it.

I mean, even if I could get the cards I want for 10k (and that's really low-balling it), I have so many *other* things that need 10k worth of dollars.

Went to buy a box of Unstable. Turns out the shop had a Masterpiece Solemn Simulacrum. It looked cold and lonely in the binder. It's now my lil' robot buddy.

That's nice. I think that's something hard to resist for a lot of EDH players. I haven't made any impulse buys lately besides a promo Hostage Taker I got after the prerelease. Yeah, I impulse bought some X-Wing miniatures. They look pretty.

I've been sitting on my cash lately, but now I'm building Najeela. I bought some stuff (planned, so that doesn't count as an impulse purchase) and a judge foil Sword of Feast and Famine. Man, that pretty border version is so pretty. Sword of Fire and Ice has long been my one of my favorite cards (I own 3 ever since I played RG survival advantage in Legacy). That judge foil might the favorite card of my collection.

I picked up a Mox Amber and a Jace Spellbook on an impulse. Got a foil Counterspell out of the spellbook so not all bad. If I wasn't in the process of buying a house, I'd have picked up one of them judge foil Elesh Norns with the Phyrexian writing. SO PRETTY.

Yeah, I can see why you'd want that card, it's a great promo. I love that Wizards takes some of these promo's off the beaten path. I don't like Norn as a card though, and I feel I should've bought it before the price went up (if I had wanted one).

Good luck buying a house!

I don't normally trade reserve list cards for non-reserve list but I have a Jihad that's been in my binder forever and only got played once. I may turn it into one of those fancy Norns.

My Dack Fayden arrived (to be slotted in my Kenrith twins deck). I impulse bought a Search for Azcanta and judge foil Avacyn, Angel of Hope on its heels. Hoo boy, am I just bad at this.

At least it's not reserved list space-dollars stuff.

With Core Set 19 out, I picked up two copies of Crucible of Worlds among other things. I'm slowly making my way towards someday building my Gilgamesh deck, but until then I'm going to work on trying to make something like the old Solar Flare deck with the new Chromium, the Mutable.
